Following a tree survey which highlighted a number of areas that needed addressing Devon Woodman were invited to tender. Following the tender process which included, quotes, RAMS and audit Devon Woodman were asked to carry out the work.
Given the extent of the work specified a detailed plan of action was put into place to ensure the work could be carried out safely and with minimum disruption to the business.
Following a council request, the Beech along the roadside were required to be crown lifted to ensure clearance of 5.2m for vehicles.
Given the nature of the road traffic management were required, this was organised by Devon Woodman and the work carried out within 6 hours to avoid and over-charges.
Following the tree survey around 40 Ash trees were identified to have signs of Ash Dieback and needed to be removed. Given the proximity of the trees to the car park, a petrol station and the need to preserve the other trees on the bank, the most efficient way to remove the trees was with a crane.
The work had to be carried out within tight timescales and with a number of logistical challenges to ensure there was still enough car parking available whilst the work was being carried out. All chip and timber was removed from site with the work being competed within the timescales provided.
Across the entire site a number of trees required remedial work, including removals, stump grinding, reductions, crown lift and removal of Ash along a secondary car park (pictured). All was executed in accordance with health & safety policies and RAMS.
Following a number of wind-related tree falls in 2023, The Cornwall Bakery employed a tree consultancy firm to carry out a survey of the trees across our twenty-eight-acre site. The survey revealed an extensive problem with a particular species of tree and lesser problems with a few other species.
Tenders were invited from four tree surgeons, with Devon Woodman winning the contract to carry out the immediate remedial works as specified in the survey in order to make the site safe.
On account of our proximity to a major supermarket, with access road and fuel station located against part of our boundary, our health and safety department requested Devon Woodman use a crane to extract trees so as to negate the possibility of hazard to supermarket customers and property; Devon Woodman were happy to comply with this request and altered their schedule to accommodate the company’s nervousness regarding further damage to staff vehicles and the possibility of wider damage or injury.
A few months after the completion of the survey remedials, The Cornwall Bakery suffered further wind-related tree falls which also resulted in damage to staff vehicles; the latter falls of healthy trees. Devon Woodman again altered their schedule at short notice to accommodate our needs and recommended a plan to remove the threat of continued wind-related tree damage.
Consultation with the Forestry Commission resulted in the granting of a clear-felling licence along our supermarket boundary in accordance with Devon Woodman’s felling and replanting plan. The clear-felling and long-term maintenance of the supermarket boundary in accordance with Forestry Commission licencing conditions and any needs which arise across the site in the foreseeable future will be carried out by Devon Woodman.
We have found Devon Woodman to be both accommodating and professional in their approach to our tree works, working closely with our health and safety department to comply with our stringent site safety policy. Additionally, Devon Woodman has arranged traffic management on behalf of the bakery on occasions where tree-works have impacted highways and carried out these works with minimal disruption to through and site-related traffic.
The Cornwall Bakery is satisfied with all aspects of the works carried out by Devon Woodman on our behalf, some of which was undertaken in trying conditions.
